Pecan Defection

Syrupy sweet,
Nutty confection.
Warm
crusty
embrace.
Endless craving.
Filling, luscious,
gluttonous
rapture.
Ecstasy.

Treacherous Tastes

I was not born in the South. But try telling my taste buds that.

I love pecan pie. Crave it. Must have it.

It is my nemesis. It is my lover. It is my downfall.

Here in the land of the cheese steak and soft pretzel, my tongue could be strung up for treason. (That would give a whole new meaning to the phrase "tongue-tied".) Or at the very least, scrubbed with sandpaper until they begged for mercy.

Don't even get me started on sweet tea. If pecan pie is my lover, then sweet tea is my dominatrix. Tie me up, whip me, beat me, pass me the lemon and call me sunk.

Monday, August 16, 2004

The Challenge

My husband used to be in the USAF as an Ammo Troop. Now he has found himself longing for mementos of his military days. We no longer live near an Air Force base, so we find ourselves in a quandary. He wants things that relate to "Ammo" such as coins, license plates, etc. It seems that once you are out of the military these things are not so easy to obtain.

I have tried ebay for them, but they only offer so much. It seems as though the few things that they do offer are the same things over and over and over again. Web searches pretty much turn up the same thing... nothing. That is unless you want to pay $500 to get a die made and a minimum order put in for coins. Yikes!

Hubby would love to have just a regular Ammo challenge coin. Nothing fancy, just the basic one with the pisspot on the front and the "providing the enemy the opportunity to die for it's country" on the back. I would love to see him be able to get coins from his three main bases: Incirlik AFB, Turkey; Hurlburt Field, Florida and Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. The trouble is finding the plain (no colors added) bronze or silver coins.

If anyone knows where to get these coins, please let me know. As for right now I am going back to running another web search. Wish me luck!

Friday, August 13, 2004

Pearls of Wisdom

Or at least little nuggets of humor. Have you ever read the comic strip "Pearls Before Swine"? It's offbeat. It's quirky. It's too good not to share. Every day my best friend and I giggle with glee over the antics of a dense pig and a rat bent on world (or at least the comic strip world) domination.

Friday, August 13, 2004

Gone Greek

Seems everyone is getting into the Olympic spirit. Even google. Check out those pecs... um... I mean pics. One wonders... What do they wear under thier togas? Are there stories and jokes of Greeks and goats like Scots and sheep? There's just something about a man in a skirt.

Friday, August 13, 2004

Days Gone By

Today I stumbled across this site where there are postings of one guy's view of life while stationed in Iraq. It's actually posted by his SO and she gleans the little "on" topics from their online chats.

It brought back memories of my hubby and our communications while was stationed in Kuwait and Iraq during Desert Storm. Strange to think that although it was not so very long ago, back then it wasn't common for the email/internet thing to be happening.

Computers back then were strictly for military and medical needs (at least in the places where my SO was). If you were the tech who worked on the computer you might be able to sneak something back to your loved ones. If you weren't then you could either try to call home (if a phone was available and at astronomical rates) or do the letter brigade with everyone else.

Thank goodness for the advent of technology. I remember waiting for those letters like it was crack. Had to have one to know that he was alright. Reading each letter over and over again. Having memorized it by the thirtieth time through, but needing to hold it in your hands why your eyes eagerly skipped over every precious word. Getting worried if the time span was too long between "fixes", etc.

Having the technology along while the boys and girls are out in the sandbox is a great comfort. To those there, and those left behind. What the word of a loved one can do is a miracle.

Thursday, August 12, 2004

I'm Such a Slacker

It seems as though I pop into Xanga just to pop right back out again. That's right, I'm a naughty, naughty girl. Go ahead and whip me with a wet noodle. Whip me! Whip me! Whip meeeeeeeee!

Thrown

Okay, so I am not really into flagellation by pasta. After all, you're supposed to eat your spaghetti not play with it. I wish someone could explain that to my rowdy two year old. She has made the assumption that she's the next Jackson Pollock and that the whole kitchen is her canvas.

The dog is her biggest fan. Now only if he paid for her artistic endeavors. By now we could be making quite the comfortable living. Enough to keep us in pampers anyways.

Monday, January 26, 2004

Whatever Happened to Goodbye?

Perhaps in a way I want to be a control freak. I may go slightly insane wondering if it is unreasonable to get a goodbye. Or at the very least a "I'm going out".

My husband has once again left the house. Just opened up the door and went outside to shovel the drive. Then he must have felt like getting in the car and leaving. Without a word. Without one single lousy word.

And without his cell phone. Which means that I can not call him. I can't just dial him up and say, "Hey whatcha doin'?". Instead I am here with the kids left to wonder just where he went. Wondering when he will return. Wondering why it is to friggin' hard to say "I'm going to the (insert destination here)." before heading out.

What does get me, besides the lack of complete courtesy, is that I could never do the same. Well, I could. But in my case I would catch hell for doing so. "Walk out and leave your children unattended? Leave without an explanation of where you are going? Not even saying when you will return? How dare you!" Picture these phrases the kinder, edited for television version of what I would catch. Not to mention the silent treatment or the guilt trip that lasts for days on end.

Yet, still I sit here wondering if it's just me being unreasonable. Where oh where is that ton of bricks to fall on me when I need it? Wake up girl and demand some respect!

*****UPDATE*****

Hubby and I have had a talk. He still does not realize that it takes two to tango. Or in this case that both of the parents are responsible for the children. But he is getting better.

It's not that I resrtict him from going out, goodness knows it is the opposite. I am always encouraging him to go on out with friends, etc. It's just that I would like to know where he is going and an approximate time as to when he'll be back.

That in itself is not too much to ask. It is just a reasonable request. And a most admired point of being an adult... responsibility.

Monday, January 26, 2004

Snowbound Midnight

What is it about a snowy landscape at night that makes one think of peace? It is if a quiet serenity fills the land once it is blanketed by snow. As if in some fashion that delicate layer of crystallized water somehow erases all. Or rather hides the untidiness of the world from our eyes. Leaving instead a purity of emotion, a rarity of calm, a salvation from ourselves and our every day lives. Greedily we soak it in. For at the back of our minds we know that it is but a moment. Soon the world will go on, the quiet broken and the sun will rise to awaken the chaos that is life.
